In the universe’s eternal play, birth and death play a central role. On the mortal earth, the cycle may include stagnation. It includes empires, civilizations, and religions. It results in a reactionary offshoot or an entirely new religion. Sikhism came to the scene as an offshoot of Hinduism. Mullahs and Pandits were exploiting the masses, turning the societies into a cesspool.
It was nothing new; just like Socrates, Jesus and others, Nanak tried to simplify the message into colloquial languages. He was lucky not to pay the price with his life, but his successors would, and it would turn into a violent history. Unfortunately, the vastness of Hinduism would engulf the nascent messages. A famous Muslim poet deplored that Islam drowned on the banks of the Ganges. A controversial subject, but these are ironies played by history. Genghis Khan sodomized Islamic sultanates, and his wrath humiliated the Muslim populace. In the end, the conquerors embraced Islam, and the vanquished proudly took the surname Khan of their oppressors.
Today, it is impossible to distinguish between the two religions, especially concerning pointless rituals. One has a bodi (tuft) on its head, and the other a joora (hair bun). The gatra has become a janau. Kachha is the new dhoti. Fictitious portraits and ceremonial weapons have replaced the idols: fire, incense, circumventing, mumbling, and other worthless time-wasting degenerative habits. Hindus worship peepal and Banyan trees; Sikhs less loft trees like jhand, ritha, or berries. There are gurudwaras named after these trees. Caste and creed are the new ugly monsters rearing their heads. While Hindus prostate before Brahmins and idols, fake or real, Sikhs kneel before anyone, including bhands and mirasis. Sikhs are wallowing in the quicksand Gurus tried to get them out.
It wasn’t always like this. Hindus joined Sikhism for many nominal reasons. First was safety and protection; after Sikhs wrested power and became the rulers, Muslims left them alone. It was a copycat, like nature, where non-threatening animals adopt and mimic the appearance of a poisonous snake. Hindus were vilified for one reason or another and this also gave them an opportunity to escape the caricature and stereotype. In Pakistan, Hindus convert to Sikhism, hoping for the same but it doesn’t work. The token loyalty did not help the new faith. On the contrary, it hurt the new religion. The numerous converts brought their bad habits and rituals to the new fold. They did not change but changed the code of conduct to fit their narrative. Gurudwaras became temples and were managed as such.
Guru Gobind Singh is remembered for raising armies to defend against Muslim Mughals. However, rarely, it is mentioned that he burnt alive the mahant caretakers of the gurudwaras who were transitory Hindus. He ordered them to be dragged by their beards. Bhai Pheru near Lahore was one such mahant who pulled his own beard or that is how one story goes. The Nankana massacre was one such nightmare when a mahant used Pathan thugs to shoot pilgrims protesting the crimes committed by his goons.
After partition, the simple Sikhs were no match for the crafty Brahmin and gradually they were neutered. The infiltration and brainwashing were carried out covertly. The religion has returned to Hindu ways. It has been reduced to a glorified cult.
